Philly Schools Start at 9:00 a.m.

With the exception of four buildings, schools in Philadelphia are going to be opening up later next school!

¨I think that changing the start time of schools in Philadelphia to 9am is a good idea,” FAHS ESL teacher Mrs. Kaucher said.

On sleepfoundation.org, it states that, “Later school start times support the biological needs of adolescents; they increase the amount of sleep adolescents get. Other benefits of later start times include Improved attendance at school.”

Not only are administrators changing the school start time for the students to gain more sleep but for them to get to school in a safer manner. Schools in Philadelphia believe that this change will have a good outcome by students being able to travel more safely during the day and afternoon.

Sleep could be good for teens, but it can lead to potential issues. This change could ruin work schedules for older students. Another issue is that, if a student needs to get home and doesn’t have a ride, some parents have to go out of their way to get their child.

This change in school times for Philadelphia is going to affect many people; there are some obvious pros and cons to it, but only time will tell whether it is received favorably in the fall.

¨I think students would benefit from starting later in the day because it would allow them to get more sleep, which would allow them to be more focused during the day. Students would be more engaged in the instruction, which would also help in the retention of information. Students would be less lethargic during the day, and they would be more likely to actively participate in class,” Kaucher said.
